I’m Taking part in the BIG BLUE VILANKULO SAILFISH COMPETITION WITH MY FRIENDS, with sponsorship from BaHIA MAR BOUTIQUE HOTEL and VILA DO PARAISO.
WE’re RAISING AWARENESS and FUNDS for oUR COMMUNITY PROJECT – BONGUILI- SUPPORTING PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION here in vilankulo.
Big Blue Vilankulo – one of the companies that fall under the #MeetMeInVilankulo campaign – has an annual Sailfish Competition here in Vilankulo as the Bazaruto Archipelago’s waters cool down and the ‘Sailies’ start moving into our ocean. The competition has been running for 6 years and is hosted at Vila Do Paraiso, a well know lodge in our town.
I was at the closing ceremony for this competition last year (when I came to shoot Bahia Mar‘s marketing film as a freelancer) and if you would have told me then that I would now not only live in this small fishing town, but also enter the actual competition with an all female team (for the first time in the history of the competition), I would have told you you’re nuts.
Goes to show. Never say never. Ever.
(By the way, to those of you who don’t know anything about a Sailfish, I’ve embedded a picture below. This fish is part of the greater Billfish family. Once the fish is caught, it is tagged and released.)
My friends and colleagues at Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel – Susana (below right) and Gretha (below left) – were keen to join me in this crazy idea and give the boys a run for their money. We were fortunate enough to have Bahia Mar fund our entrance fee and fuel – for which we are extremely grateful – and that the guys at Vila Do Paraiso (VDP) were keen to sponsor us some fishing tackle.
Here (below) we are pictured in front of VDP on the beach. Ready for action!
Thanks again Vila Do Paraiso and Bahia Mar! We’ll try and make you all proud … even if we have never really caught any fish in our lives. Just look at how ready we are …
In exactly one week from now the @bigbluevilankulo annual Sailfish Competition kicks off and we're thrilled to host the event once again. This year we're also sponsoring the first ever female team's tackle as the fish to raise funds and awareness for preschool education here in Vilankulo. Follow our social media platforms for daily updates. #MeetMeInVilankulo #VilaDoParaiso
This is the pool at Vila Do Paraiso where, after after a long day at sea, we’ll enjoy some refreshments, dinner and hopefully not be too intimidated by the boys and all their catches.
Besides trying to give the boys a run for their money, Gretha, Susana and I are very passionate about our community project which is part of Bahia Mar‘s social responsibility here in our town. The project is called Bonguilli and it aids pre-school education and infrastructure- something that is greatly neglected here in Mozambique, even though it is an integral part of any child’s intellectual development.
Below is a picture of of one of our graduates last year.
I’ve set up a fundraiser where you can support us Mermaids in raising money for the little school. You can donate anything from 1$ to 150$. And I’ll send you gifts. BEAUTIFUL THANK YOU GIFTS.
We would really appreciate it if you could share this campaign with anyone you think might want to back us. A little goes a long way here, and we are in dire need for more money to buy stationary, pay a teacher’s salary and build another storeroom.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this! Here’s to FISHING FOR SCHOOLS!
Special thanks to Denise and Erica below. They are the very best of friends for helping with fishing relief duties!
